I'd recommend you give Safe Boot a second try.
These are the two most common causes of Excel being slow. The purpose of testing in safe mode is to see whether a font issue or 3rd party application running is the cause of the slow-down. You can choose a different font (Calibri has lots of glyphs) in Safe Mode and you should be able to see the text. The font Excel used to substitute doesn't happen to have "glphys" (the character shapes) the originally specified font had. If your workbook uses a font that is not currently load, Excel What's happening is that when you do a Safe Boot, only a small subset of available fonts are loaded. This is normal behavior when doing a Safe Boot. I didn't address the font issue last time. Let me know if Excel works expectedly in new profile.
